Abstract.

The article offers a comprehensive analysis of the introduction of self-service cash registers in Russian retail as one of the main drivers of the digital transformation of the retail industry. The economic advantages of automation are evaluated: reducing operating costs, optimizing labor and material resources, increasing the capacity of points of sale and service efficiency. Special attention is paid to social aspects, such as the evolution of the customer experience, changing the roles and competencies of staff, and bridging the digital divide between different user groups. The role of import substitution and measures of state support for the industry are analyzed separately. It is important to note that the automation of cash registers in Russian retail represents a significant change in the labor market, and not just the introduction of technology. Automation opens up new professional fields of activity that require digital knowledge and an analytical mindset, but the introduction of technology, for all its convenience, inevitably leads to a reduction in low-skilled positions, including cashiers and support workers. Automation of retail through self–service cash desks is an inevitable step towards improving the customer experience and trading. Considering CSR from the economic side, we noted the positive trends of this technology, namely, cost reduction, routine operations, which effectively allocates the available resources, which is no less important for large-scale retailers and local small stores. At the technological level, CSR promotes and stimulates the development of domestic production, localization of equipment and software development by Russian specialists. CSR helps to reduce paper receipts and reduce energy consumption. All together, this forms a sustainable development model in which automation ceases to be a highly specialized process and becomes part of an adaptive, technologically independent and socially sensitive infrastructure of Russian retail.
