Abstract.

The article tests and analyzes the hypothesis of the existence of a special “market cycle” or a cycle for an investment portfolio that would characterize changes and certain trends in financial assets relative to the business cycle. It is shown that this hypothesis is of interest for further research. At the same time, this hypothesis of an idealized cycle is typical only for certain markets and certain countries. In a short retrospective of 2020-2022, the dynamics of the US stock market is shown. The real agenda of the Russian stock market is highlighted, including: stagnant and promising financial assets are identified. In countries with a market economy, production, employment and other macroeconomic indicators are subject to cyclical changes - when all the main variables replace each other with periods of ups and downs, therefore, to describe the development of an economic system in market conditions, the concept of economic cycles is often used, which indicate that those or other phenomena in market conditions tend to repeat themselves and occur more than once. The business cycle is the periodic fluctuations in economic activity. As a rule, one speaks of four main phases: boom, recession (recession), depression and revival. Each phase of the economic cycle certainly has its own characteristics and functions.
